Audition Information

Eligibility and Fees:
7th and 8th Grade music students in the State of Colorado are eligible to audition for the CMASC. Please see the Eligibility Page for more detailed requirements.

The CMASC also requires that the submitting director recommend all of their students auditioning, asserting that the auditioning student has the discipline and maturity to participate in a high level musical event. There is a $21.00 audition fee per student to audition for All State Choir. If accepted, students must agree to attend the entire two day event on March 7-8, 2019, and pay a $40.00 acceptance fee in order to participate. Participation fees, transportation lodging, and purchase of concert repertoire is all the responsibility of the auditioning school and/or the individual student.

NEW FOR 2017-2018: Teachers may submit a maximum of 35 students; any auditions over 35 will not be considered.

Audition Elements:
BE ADVISED The Colorado Middle School All State Board has made changes to the audition process, please read carefully and study the practice audition materials.

Recommended students must complete an audition recording in which they will sing an accompanied prepared song
, sing an ascending and descending major scale, sing an ascending and descending major and minor triad, sing a short excerpt after two hearings, and sing two short melodic examples at sight (see sightreading elements here).  Students may not see the Aural Recall/Rote Learning Example, or Sight-Reading exerpt prior to their audition recording. Other methods of audition preparation are highly encouraged. Completed recordings will then be labeled and submitted to this website in mp3 format via our Submission Page.

Each student will audition with a recorded track and script. Teachers will NOT be speaking or playing anything on a student's audition recording, as everything will be provided for them on the recorded script.

There are SIX different scripts for each of the six available voice parts. Each script has recorded accompaniment, a scale, triads, aural recall and sight-reading transposed into a beneficial key for each voice part. PLEASE CHOOSE WHICH VOICE PART to audition each student for based on what keys work best for them in the provided scripts. (Note that the scripts for female soprano 1 singers and unchanged male soprano 1 singers are identical, same with Sop II and Altos).

Available Voice Parts:

Female students may be placed in the Treble Choir or the Women's Choir. The available voice parts to female singers are Soprano I, Soprano II, and Alto.

Male students may audition for the Treble Choir if they are unchanged Soprano I, Soprano II, or Alto, or the Men's Choir if they are Tenor I, Tenor II, or Baritone-Bass that are in all stages of the voice change.
NOTE: In the event that an unchanged boy is accepted into the Treble Choir and then begins to lower between his acceptance  and the actual event, he may still participate in All State he will just be moved to the part best suited for him in the Men's Choir.

The deadline to submit registration forms and audition recordings online and pay audition fees either online or by mail is 5 PM, Friday, October 6th, 2017!

Accommodations for Visually Impaired Students:
CMASC is now offering accommodations for students with visual impairments! Teachers of students with visual impairments who wish to audition should email both co-chairs (wubbena_nathan@svvsd.org and cbennett@wpsdk12.org) prior to the audition launch, and we will be happy to provide an alternate audition. Auditions for visually impaired students will substitute additional aural recall examples in place of the two sight-reading examples.

Accommodations for Students with Religious Objections:
Teachers of students with religious or political objections to audition materials who wish to audition should email both Co-Chairs (wubbena_nathan@svvsd.org and cbennett@wpsdk12.org) prior to the audition launch, and we will be happy to provide an alternate audition.
Teachers MUST contact the Co-Chairs at least TWO WEEKS PRIOR to the audition deadline. If directors do not contact us in the appropriate time frame and/or choose to change the audition without permission, the student will be automatically disqualified.
